Pirate Party of Luxembourg Supports Toomaj Salehi and Four Other Prisoners

Luxembourg - May 3, 2024

Following the letter sent by the SIMOURQ Association last week to governmental bodies, ministries, and political parties in Luxembourg urging them to take a firm and determined stance in support of prisoners' rights, especially regarding the unjust sentencing of Toomaj Salehi to death, and to collaborate with other countries and international organizations to exert necessary pressure to create a space of justice and fairness concerning unfair trials, the Pirates of Luxembourg were the first group to respond to this call and letter.
In a written response to the SIMOURQ Association's letter, members of the Pirate Party expressed their deep concern and regret for the intervention and rescue of Toomaj Salehi, an Iranian rap singer and songwriter who has recently been unjustly sentenced to death, and provided a copy of the letter they had sent to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Brussels to the SIMOURQ Association.

In the letter sent by the Pirate Party to the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the address of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Brussels, it is stated:
"No regime succeeds in suppressing legitimate democratic aspirations, which are part of the fundamental rights of humanity. The fact that Iranian authorities are seeking blatantly unfair trials against many of their citizens who have been caught in the aftermath of the uprising that has engulfed the country since mid-September 2022, seeking executions, is unacceptable. The latest example is Toomaj Salehi, a rap singer.
Toomaj Salehi is an artist who was initially imprisoned for protesting the repressive policies of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and then transferred to Isfahan Prison under unfavorable conditions on baseless charges awaiting execution. Mr. Salehi, like many before him, has been unable to benefit from a fair trial.
The Pirate Party stands alongside the people of Iran and with experts from the United Nations, including the Special Committee on the Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, who have called for the immediate release of Mr. Salehi.
We also remind you, Mr. Judiciary official, that members of the Pirate Party have always called for the immediate abolition of all convictions and death sentences. We once again urge you to release all those who have been detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful assembly, including Mr. Toomaj Salehi, Arian Farzamnia, Amir Mohammad Jafari, Amin Mahdi Shokrollahi, and Ali Younesi. Finally, we want prisoners to be allowed to meet with their families and chosen lawyers, to be protected from torture and ill-treatment, and to investigate allegations of torture."
The Pirate Party's response underscores a growing international outcry against the unjust treatment of individuals like Toomaj Salehi and highlights the importance of collective action in advocating for human rights and justice.

Police Warning Regarding New Method of Theft

Luxembourg - May 3, 2024

When it comes to perpetrating wrongdoing, the ingenuity of criminals knows no bounds. Luxembourg police have issued a warning about a new method being employed by burglars before carrying out thefts.
Burglars are now using very fine threads or adhesive tape to ascertain whether residents are at home or not. These barely visible threads or tapes are strategically placed in the bottom corner of apartment entrance doors prior to the burglary.
This method serves as a means to gauge the presence of residents at the premises. If the threads or tapes are disturbed or severed, burglars deduce that someone has entered or exited the apartment. Conversely, if the threads or tapes remain intact, it indicates that the residents may be absent, presenting an opportune time for theft.
Police emphasize the importance of citizens promptly reporting the discovery of such threads or tapes on their own or neighbors' doorsteps to the police center at 113. Vigilance and swift action are essential in thwarting potential criminal activities and ensuring community safety.

"Self-Protection Against Digital Threats: A Crucial Imperative"

Luxembourg - May 3, 2024

In today's digital age, the pervasiveness of online threats looms large, capable of ensnaring even the most vigilant. Messages like "Complete your account information to avoid suspension," "Your package is held at customs, please update your status," or "Kindly provide your information to confirm your order" are just a few examples of the new breed of internet threats lurking in our virtual realm. Accompanied by hyperlinks leading to counterfeit web pages mimicking reputable platforms, these messages represent an ongoing and evolving challenge that demands unwavering awareness.
Data breaches via text messages or emails, fraudulent websites, spyware, and even viruses continue to proliferate unabated on our smartphones, constituting a persistent menace that has surged over the years. According to a United Nations report, a cyberattack occurs every 39 seconds.
To combat this pervasive threat, safeguarding oneself with a robust cybersecurity solution is imperative. In Luxembourg, Tango is the sole operator offering a simple yet effective mobile phone security solution, shielding its customers from malicious websites, emails, and text messages. Known as Net Protect, this program identifies and blocks malicious websites, phishing attempts, viruses, and spyware, automatically fortifying itself against the latest threats every second.
Not only is this program highly effective, but it's also remarkably user-friendly. With just a click from the My Tango app or Tango store, users can activate this service effortlessly. Once activated, Net Protect safeguards users via the Tango mobile network, requiring no intervention from the user, whether within Luxembourg or abroad.
Currently, Tango invites users to trial smartphone protection free of charge for six months upon subscribing to their mobile phone service. Subsequently, should users opt to retain the service, it's available for a nominal fee of just 2 euros per month, without any contractual obligations. Protect yourself against digital threats and safeguard your digital presence.

"Refugee Situation in Luxembourg Knows No Age Boundaries"

Luxembourg - May 3, 2024

In a noteworthy trend, Luxembourg stands witness to an indiscriminate pursuit of asylum, irrespective of age barriers. A staggering 146 unaccompanied minors filed for international protection as asylum seekers in the preceding year alone. Furthermore, within the initial quarter of this year, seven unaccompanied minors presented themselves as asylum seekers within Luxembourg's borders.
To address this pressing issue, Luxembourg has established 16 specialized facilities strategically positioned throughout the nation. These facilities are equipped to shelter and support minors who arrive devoid of parental guidance, with each capable of accommodating up to 18 such individuals. Comprehensive assistance is extended to these minors both prior to and following the submission of their asylum applications.
Despite ongoing deliberations within the European Union regarding the contentious practice of repatriating asylum seekers to third-party nations, the prevalence of asylum seekers and the associated complexities persist unabated within Europe's borders.
The subject of asylum elicits diverse perspectives among citizens. Some conjecture that individuals often perceive seeking asylum as a convenient alternative to the ostensibly arduous processes associated with obtaining work or study visas. What are your reflections on this matter? Do you align with the viewpoint held by certain citizens that asylum seekers frequently opt for this route as a streamlined alternative to pursuing work or study visas?
